
With dwindling land sizes and returns in traditional crops, fruit trees are one of the viable interventions for long-term benefits for food security and financial return. Promotion of fruit trees are one of the viable interventions for long-term benefits. Horticulture is also emerging as a priority area of government intervention, (i.e. National horticulture Mission) and demand of fruits and vegetables in food processing industries is increasing.
SST developed a specific model considering the small and marginal farmers for whom food security as well as assured remunerative returns from field. More than 1500 families have adopted this practice in the project area of SST in the last 3 years.
1.5 lacs fruit plants have been distributed and planted in 50 villages. Two distinct clusters of Kinnu and Guava are coming up in two geographical areas in Tijara block. There are more than 300 orchards of Kinnu and Guava is part of these clusters started producing fruits. Many of the farmers have been earning good amount of money by selling kinnu and guava in local market.
